Forget Love, We Have A Point To Make

5 Mar

In the year 2013, you’d think we’d be progressive enough to accept everybody. Race, gender, and sexuality should not be a reason to segregate a person from anything. If only more people thought like this. I stumbled upon an article recently titled “Argument Against Gay Marriage”. Since this is a topic I feel very strongly about, I had to click on and find out more.

At the end of this month, the Supreme Court will have to make a decision on two separate cases involving gay marriage: Hollingsworth v. Perry, a challenge to California’s gay marriage ban, and United States v. Windsor, which seeks to overturn the federal Defense of Marriage Act. Both of these cases are using the argument that couples of the same-sex cannot become accidentally pregnant and thus do not need access to marriage. A representative/marriage ban front-runner followed this argument up by stating that we need to uphold the law that the government has a legitimate interest in solely recognizing marriages between men and women because it encourages them to form stable family units. After reading this article, I was so mad to the point I felt like I had steam coming out of my ears. This seriously cannot be a plausible argument? I know many heterosexual couples that have had children and were later divorced. To further make my point, there are also numerous homosexual couples that I know that have children and have managed to successfully raise those children. Just because they cannot have children in the biological sense DOES NOT mean that same-sex couples are incapable of forming “stable family units”. Love should be acceptable enough as a person’s reason to marry, not the fact that they can or cannot procreate.

I had to click off of the website and turn to something else before I started yelling at the screen. I am a firm believer in the fact that everyone deserves love and however they want to express that love should be allowed. Nobody is trying to take marriage away from heterosexual couples, so why are some people so hell-bent on taking it away from homosexuals?
